Is this diet safe?
Absolutely. If you follow the ULTRAfit™ Amino Acid Diet as detailed for you and if you take the precautions for medical conditions as noted, then the diet is absolutely safe. See page 78 of Dr. Joe Davis' book ULTRAfit™. Read more about diet considerations.
Do I have to eat all the meals and all the tablets?
Absolutely. You must not skip any meals and the necessity of taking a vitamin/supplement/mineral cannot be stressed enough.
How can I expect to feel the first day?
During the first few days of following the
ULTRAfit™ Amino Acid Diet, you may notice a little more gas than usual. This comes as a result of the increased carbohydrate load presented to your colonic bacteria. These bacteria ferment some of the unabsorbed fiber and give off hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane in the process. You may experience a headache the first two or three days on the diet. The headaches should not persist. The headaches arise due to your body adjusting to a new caloric intake.
Can I use this diet while being hypoglycemic?
Absolutely. Because of the frequent feedings of carbohydrates and amino acids, your body can control your blood sugar level more evenly. Read more about diet considerations.
What happens if I have elevated cholesterol?
The diet, virtually fat-free, has a marked lowering effect on the blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Can I make substitutions?
In general, that is not a good idea. You may use the substitutions listed on the
ULTRAfit™ Amino Acid Diet. Changes encourage people to stray away from the program. If you follow the program exactly, you can expect satisfactory results.
Why are there no vegetables?
A big bonus of this program comes with it's simplicity. It requires no significant food preparation. That means, do not add any vegetables. Dr. Davis found that allowing his patients to include vegetables, they soon began adding butter or other oils for additional flavor. The vitamin and mineral supplements provide your body with all its needs, including trace minerals, nutrients normally found in vegetables. The roughage in the diet assists you in bowel regularity. Dr. Davis also found that if a diet becomes too complicated, his patients would become discouraged and sometimes confused.
Can I use golf or bowling as my aerobic exercise?
No. These do not have enough uninterrupted aerobic activity to benefit your muscular tissue and their mitochondria. However, these sports do represent healthy recreational activities.
If egg white provides the most complete source of essential amino acids, why can't I eat egg white instead of chewing all those pills?
You could. You'd need to eat the egg white of two large eggs with each feeding. One caution -- the egg white requires digestion. The digestive process delays the delivery of the amino acids into your bloodstream and thus to your brain's hunger center. Also the digestive process prevents the total absorption of the protein, which means you will lose some of the protein.
For anyone on a low-calorie diet such as this, hunger control becomes critical. If you wait for your body to digest the protein taken from a food source, your hunger center will signal your brain that food is in short supply and thus make you feel hungry. The amino acid tablets go directly into the bloodstream without having to wait for you body to digest them. They signal your brain that food is not in short supply and you feel satisfied.
Are all amino acid tablets the same?
No. The amino acid tablets should be derived from the predigestion of a high-quality protein. In the book
"ULTRAfit™" by Dr. Davis. Chapter 13,
"The Informed Buyer", lists distributors of acceptable products and discuss how to read labels. Do not use a capsule that contains only a single amino acid as a substitute for a product that provides the ten essential amino acids in one tablet. For example, single amino acids, such as lysine or tryptophane, can be purchased in capsule form. Physicians use these single amino acids to treat medical conditions. They do not provide the complete proteins that your body needs.
What happens if I skip one feeding?
You may get very hungry. Here's why. The
ULTRAfit™ Amino Acid Diet uses two safe and effective appetite suppressants. Amino acids and complex carbohydrates that your body converts to glucose (derived from fruits and grains) reassure the brain that food is not in short supply, and signals the body to keep the metabolic rate at a higher level, luring excess calories stored in your fat and speeding up your rate of weight loss. Because your brain does not have to suffer through wide swings in blood sugar or blood amino acid levels, you do not experience the ups and downs and cravings so common with most diet programs.
